Matariki Celebration/Cross Country
"Mānawatia a Matariki" is a phrase in te reo Māori that translates to "Honour, acknowledge, and welcome Matariki". It's a greeting used to celebrate the Māori New Year, which is marked by the rising of the Matariki star cluster (also known as the Pleiades).
Our students have been learning about the Māori tradition of Matariki, and also the ways in which other cultures acknowledge and describe the origins of the star cluster Pleiades.
We are looking forward to sharing our learning with you next Thursday the 19th of June as we have our Matariki Celebration Assembly and Shared Kai.
Thursday will be a busy day for us as we will also have our Cross Country that morning. Whaanau, Parents, and Grandparents are welcome to join us from 10am.
Here is the outline of the day:
10 am: The Cross Country Run will begin. All students will be running together on a track designed by our teachers Mrs Baigent and Miss Hart.
10:30 am: Morning tea (a cup of tea and a biscuit will be available for whaanau in the staff room).
11:00 am: Matariki Celebration Assembly in Rūma Tūi.
12:00 pm: Shared Kai.
Our students have been planning some Matariki kai for whaanau and we welcome you to bring some along to share as well.
After we have shared kai together you are welcome to take your children home, or we will have some Matariki activities for them to do until the usual pick up time.
